Welding robots are industrial robots engaged in welding (including cutting and spraying). According to the definition of standard welding robots by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), industrial robots are multi-purpose, reprogrammable automatic control manipulators with three or more programmable axes used in the field of industrial automation.

In order to adapt to different purposes, the mechanical interface of the last axis of the robot is usually a connecting flange that can accommodate different tools or end effectors. Welding robots are devices that attach welding tongs or welding (cutting) guns to the end flange of industrial robots, enabling them to perform welding, cutting, or thermal spraying.

With the development of electronic technology, computer technology, numerical control, and robot technology, automatic welding robots have been used in production since the 1960s, and their technology has become increasingly mature. They mainly have the following advantages:

1) Stabilize and improve welding quality, and be able to reflect welding quality in numerical form;

2) Improve labor productivity;

3) Improve the labor intensity of workers and enable them to work in hazardous environments;

4) Reduced the requirements for workers' operational skills;

5) Shortened the preparation period for product modification and replacement, and reduced the corresponding equipment investment. Therefore, it has been widely applied in various industries.
